A personal auto policy is written for personal use. Driving passengers or deliveries for pay is business use, and an insurer can deny a claim if it didn't know. Rideshare platforms carry their own policies that apply during parts of a trip, but they don't replace your personal policy and the details vary by platform and province.
In Ontario, carrying paying passengers needs a rideshare endorsement (OPCF 6A) on your policy, and since July 1, 2026 many accident benefits are optional, which matters most to self-employed drivers with no other income protection. Delivery work can need a different endorsement or a commercial policy.
