Most newcomers are rated as new drivers because insurers can't see a Canadian record. That can make a first quote much higher than you expected, especially in the GTA. But many insurers will consider your driving history from your previous country if you can prove it.

The key documents are a letter of experience from your previous insurer and your driving record or licence history, ideally translated. Exchanging your licence where your province allows it, or moving through graduated licensing quickly, also helps. A specialist knows which insurers accept which proof.
