Boat insurance is not required by federal law for pleasure craft, but marinas and lenders usually require liability, and a serious accident can cost far more than the boat. Operators of motorized pleasure craft need proof of competency, such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
Small boats may have limited coverage under a home policy, but larger or faster boats, sailboats and personal watercraft usually need a separate boat policy with liability, hull and equipment coverage.
