Cottages are priced differently from city homes. Insurers look at how often the property is empty, heating sources such as wood stoves, how far it is from a fire hall and hydrant, road access, and water risks.

Seasonal properties have stricter vacancy and maintenance rules, such as draining water lines over winter. Renting the cottage, docks, boathouses and boats all need to be declared and covered.
