Provincial health plans pay very little for care outside Canada, and US hospital bills can be enormous. Snowbird policies cover emergency medical care for long stays, often several months.
Most claims problems come from the medical questionnaire and stability clauses: a change in medication or a new symptom before you leave can affect coverage for that condition. Each province also limits how long you can be away and keep provincial coverage.
