An instant insurance quote online is often not a quote at all. What you get in 60 seconds on our site is an estimate: a dated price range for an example profile. A quote is the insurer's price after it checks your details. A bound policy is the point where you're actually covered.

Below: each step, how our estimate model works and where you can finish a purchase online.

What's the difference between an estimate, a quote and a policy?

An estimate is a modelled price range built from a few answers, and it isn't an offer. A quote is an insurer's price for you, based on your full application and its own rates. A bound policy is a contract in force: the insurer has accepted you, set the premium and confirmed the start date. Only a policy protects you.

Here's how an insurance estimate vs quote vs policy compares, side by side.

Instant estimate Quote Bound policy
Who produces it Instasure's pricing model The insurer, usually through a licensed advisor The insurer
What it uses A few answers and an example profile Your full application and the insurer's checks The accepted application and agreed terms
Can you rely on the price? No. It's a range for budgeting Yes, if your answers hold up Yes. The premium is in the contract
Are you covered? No No Yes, from the start date

The difference matters. For a Super Visa, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) wants a policy paid in full, or in instalments with a deposit: quotes aren't accepted. It must be valid for at least one year from entry, with at least $100,000 of emergency coverage. See our Super Visa insurance guide.

How an instant estimate is calculated

Our estimates come from Instasure's own pricing model, built from typical Canadian price levels, not from live insurer rates. Every result shows its review date, currently "as of October 2026". The inputs depend on the product, for example:

  • Life and critical illness: age, sex, smoking status, coverage amount and term.
  • Car: province, city, age, years licensed, tickets, at-fault claims, vehicle type and coverage level.
  • Home: province, city, rebuild cost, year built, deductible, water coverage and past claims.
  • Tenant and condo: contents value, condo improvements and past claims.
  • Travel and Super Visa: age, trip length or coverage, deductible and pre-existing condition cover.

Each result shows a typical figure, a range and three coverage options. Depending on the product, the low end sits 14% to 25% below the typical figure and the high end 17% to 30% above it. That spread allows for differences between insurers and between people. An estimate needs no contact details, runs no credit check and goes to no insurer.

Here's how single answers move two examples:

Example profile Typical estimate Range
Term life: 35-year-old female non-smoker, $500,000, 20-year term $24.50/mo $20.50 to $29.50
Same, but a smoker $55/mo $46 to $65.50
Car: 40-year-old Ontario driver, 15 years licensed, clean record, full coverage $171/mo $137 to $212
Same driver in Toronto $214/mo $171 to $266
Same Ontario driver (not Toronto) with one ticket $202/mo $162 to $251
Same Ontario driver (not Toronto) with one at-fault claim $231/mo $185 to $287

Instasure estimates for example profiles, as of October 2026. These are modelled figures, not quotes and not averages.

What underwriting still checks

Underwriting is the insurer deciding whether to accept you, on what terms and at what price.

  • Life and health: the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) explains that you must disclose information that could affect whether an insurer accepts you or what it charges. If you don't, the insurer could cancel the policy or decline a claim.
  • Car: your driving record, past claims and the vehicle.
  • Home: the rebuild cost, the home's condition and past claims.

In Ontario, FSRA says auto insurers need its approval to change the rates they use to calculate premiums. So the final price has to come from the insurer, not from our model.

Why the final price can differ from an instant insurance quote

  1. You aren't the example profile. Every detail you add moves the number.
  2. Insurers price differently. Each uses its own rates and rating factors.
  3. Underwriting finds something. It may turn up a ticket, claim or health detail the estimate didn't ask about.
  4. Discounts apply. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) notes some insurers discount for buying more than one type of insurance from them. Some also discount for applying online or for a good credit score.
  5. Coverage choices change. A different deductible, limit or endorsement changes the premium.
  6. Time passes. Our estimates are dated, and insurers change rates: see why car insurance is going up.

Products you can buy and bind online in Canada

FCAC says you can buy insurance through a licensed agent, a registered broker, the insurer directly or a lender, by phone, online or in person. The insurance company issues the policy. Binding coverage means the insurer has confirmed your cover is in force from a set date.

Can you buy insurance online instantly? Sometimes. Here's what official sources confirm (checked October 2026):

Product or situation Finish online? What the official source says
BC basic Autoplan renewal Yes, for eligible personal policies ICBC sends coverage changes and some policies, such as jointly owned or company vehicles, to an Autoplan broker.
Saskatchewan registration and plate insurance Renewal, yes SGI lets you renew online through MySGI or at a motor licence issuer. Its rate calculator gives estimates only.
Quebec digital spaces (information only) Yes, if the firm follows AMF rules AMF rules require the firm to show how to reach a representative. You can cancel within 10 days of receiving the policy.
Super Visa medical insurance Depends on the insurer IRCC needs proof of a paid policy. Quotes aren't accepted.
Private car, home, life and travel Depends on the insurer and your answers Online is one of the ways FCAC lists to buy.

How to get the most accurate estimate

  • Answer as you would on an application. Include every ticket, claim and health detail.
  • Use the right numbers. For a home, enter the rebuild cost, not the market value (why it matters).
  • Pick the coverage you'd really buy. Size life cover with the life insurance needs calculator.
  • Budget from the range. Plan around the high end, not the low end.
  • Compare like with like. When you compare insurance quotes, check they use the same limits and deductibles.

What happens after you submit

Here's how an instant insurance quote request on Instasure works:

  1. You see your estimate and three options, with no contact details needed.
  2. You ask for real quotes. Add your name and email to get a reference number. Marketing emails come only if you tick that box.
  3. A licensed advisor in your province takes your request. In Quebec and the territories, you join a waitlist instead.
  4. The advisor gets quotes from insurers using your full details.
  5. The insurer underwrites. It accepts you, changes the terms or price, or declines.
  6. You accept and pay, and the insurer confirms the start date. Now you're covered.

When a policy is placed, the insurer pays the licensed advisor or brokerage a commission: see how we make money. Our editorial guidelines explain how we label estimates. The Instasure Rate Index will publish median estimates from anonymised requests once a product and province reach 25 requests.

Michael's take

As a planner, I treat an estimate like a budget check. It tells you whether a decision fits your cash flow before anyone spends time on paperwork. It's the right first step and the wrong last step. My rule of thumb is to budget at the high end of the range, because an underwriter will see details the estimate never asked about.

The part I'd never rush is the application. Your answers become the basis of the contract. For life insurance especially, an incomplete answer can put a future claim at risk. Take the time to get them right, then let the insurer's price, not the estimate, make the final call.
